Lingerie Collaboration With Tien Phan

>> Thursday, December 30, 2010

Tien is one of my favorite photographers that I am fortunate to have as a colleague at the U.  She has a great eye for beauty and color.  When she asked me to come shoot  with her, I was thrilled.  We had a lot of fun trading around cameras and lenses, and ended up with some great stuff.  These are a few of the pictures, with editing done by tien.  I was also able to do some make-up, which was fun for me:) Check out Tien at http://mo-dream.blogspot.com/

So I found this drape hanging down and got all caught up in it taking pictures through the opening.  Needless to say, I love the effect I got.

Staged Crime Scenes

>> Sunday, December 26, 2010

I wanted to challenge myself to create pictures, using photoshop, that look very much perfected as apposed to my usual gritty style.  I chose crime scenes to create a kind of irony and make something that is usually obscene and horrific beautiful.  I really liked how the images turned out, they give the illusion of a dream and have a cinematic feel.  I want to shoot more crime scenes, but with my film camera and all gritty like:)  Thanks to my models Emily, Sam, and Linzi.

Last Seen

>> Thursday, June 24, 2010

This was my final project for my advanced photo class.  I used a holga camera with color slide film cross-processed.  When the viewer first approaches the piece, he or she might think they are just looking at some odd landscapes.  Then once they read the caption they realize that each row is a different place where someone has died recently in the Salt Lake area.  The photographs then take on a completely new meaning to the viewer.  The photographs were taken from the victim's point of view, forcing viewer to see the images the victim saw right before they died, giving them the feeling of how quickly life can end.  The colors give the photos both a seductive and sinister edge.  Overall, I'm really pleased with how it turned out.

Back Porch

>> Sunday, May 30, 2010

It was a rare warm night a few weeks ago, and I sat on my porch fascinated by the clouds in the sky.  So I brought my camera out with me at around midnight and left the shutter open for a half hour.  This is what I got.

This is a sort of exploration of a fantasy world with a dark undertone.  I was under the influence of cocorosie's music while shooting.  Thanks to my model Tenille

The pictures that are never taken.

>> Wednesday, April 28, 2010

This was a series I did for class based on the concept that photographs are only taken during happily posed moments and never during sadness and sorrow.  These pictures are personal in several ways. They portray some of my own lower moments in life as well as what I would imagine most people do or feel when they are depressed.  It's also personal because of how depression in the form of mental illness is prominent in my family.

This is the first roll of black and white film that I shot and developed myself.  You can tell from all the dust and scratches I didn't keep very good care of them.  I've had the negatives in my possession for about a year now and I just got around to scanning them in.  I still think they're beautiful photos of my good friend Michelle Bartlett.

Kristi

I like throwing people out of their comfort zones.  My roommate Kristi is usually found in pants and long shirts.  So I put her in this tiny dress and did her hair and make-up.  She hates these pictures, but they ended up being the some of the best portraits I've done. These were all taken with black and white film.
